Craniosacral Therapy in Matthews, NC

A Gentle Approach to Bodywork, Relaxation & Whole-Body Wellness

Sometimes, less really is more.

Not every body needs deep pressure, aggressive stretching, or someone digging into a stubborn muscle to benefit from therapeutic touch.

At Fire & Ice Holistic Health in Matthews, North Carolina, Craniosacral Therapy (CST) offers a different approach to bodywork — one that uses extremely light touch, gentle hand placements, and a quiet, comfortable environment.

And when I say light touch, I mean approximately five grams of pressure — about the weight of a nickel!

No elbows. No deep tissue pressure. No forceful manipulation.

Just gentle, intentional bodywork designed to encourage relaxation, comfort, and body awareness.

What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on bodywork approach that originated from osteopathic traditions.

The term craniosacral refers to two important anatomical structures:

  • Cranium: The bones that make up your skull.

  • Sacrum: The triangular bone at the base of your spine.

The brain and spinal cord are surrounded by protective membranes and cerebrospinal fluid, which help cushion and protect the central nervous system.

Craniosacral Therapy is based on a model that explores the relationships between these structures, surrounding tissues, and the body's responses to gentle touch.

Practitioners use subtle, sustained hand contact at various locations, including the head, neck, spine, pelvis, and sacrum.

CST training also involves studying cranial sutures, jaw mechanics, and a proposed craniosacral rhythm. While these concepts are part of the therapy's traditional framework, scientific research has not established that practitioners can reliably detect a distinct craniosacral rhythm or reposition adult skull bones using light touch.

The practical experience, however, is very different from conventional massage.

Craniosacral Therapy emphasizes stillness, light touch, and a gentle pace rather than deep muscular manipulation.

Who Might Be Interested in Craniosacral Therapy?

People explore Craniosacral Therapy for a variety of reasons, particularly when they prefer a gentler approach to bodywork.

Headaches, Neck & Shoulder Tension

Recurring muscular tension around the head, neck, and shoulders can be uncomfortable.

Some individuals who experience tension headaches or sensitivity around these areas prefer gentle touch rather than deep pressure.

CST offers an opportunity to experience bodywork without aggressive techniques.

TMJ Discomfort & Jaw Tension

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull and work with the muscles responsible for chewing, speaking, and jaw movement.

Jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and muscular tension around the face and temples can contribute to discomfort.

Craniosacral sessions may include gentle contact around the head, face, and jaw. Although CST has not been established as a treatment for temporomandibular disorders, clients interested in low-pressure bodywork sometimes seek it for relaxation around these areas.

Stress & Difficulty Relaxing

Life is demanding, and many people find it difficult to slow down.

CST provides a quiet environment where clients can rest while receiving comfortable, gentle touch.

Some people report feeling calmer and more relaxed following a session.

Sensitivity to Traditional Massage Pressure

Not everyone enjoys deep tissue massage.

Some people find stronger pressure uncomfortable or simply prefer a more subtle approach.

Craniosacral Therapy may be appealing to individuals seeking a gentle alternative to traditional massage.

Body Awareness & Nervous System Relaxation

Your nervous system continually processes information from your environment, including touch.

Gentle, predictable touch can be soothing, and CST offers an opportunity to focus on relaxation and awareness of physical sensations.

While specific neurological treatment claims for CST remain unproven, clients may find the experience calming.

Important: These are common reasons people seek Craniosacral Therapy, not conditions CST has been proven to diagnose or treat. Research supporting its effectiveness for specific medical conditions remains limited.

What Happens During a Craniosacral Therapy Session?

If you've never experienced CST before, you may be surprised by just how different it feels from traditional massage.

1. You Remain Fully Clothed

There's no need to undress.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to relax on the treatment table.

Craniosacral Therapy is typically performed without oils or lotions.

2. We Discuss Your Goals

Before beginning, we'll discuss your health history, areas of discomfort, and what you're hoping to experience during your session.

Your comfort and preferences guide the appointment.

3. Gentle Hand Placements

Using very light, sustained contact, I may work at various locations, including your feet, pelvis, sacrum, torso, neck, and head.

Pressure is generally extremely light, often described as approximately five grams.

There is no forceful manipulation or deep muscular pressure.

4. Time to Relax

Sessions are generally quiet and unhurried.

You don't need to perform exercises, stretch, or actively participate unless we discuss something specific.

You're welcome to rest, close your eyes, or communicate whenever you need an adjustment.

5. Every Experience Is Different

Some clients report a sense of deep relaxation, warmth, or increased awareness of areas where they hold tension.

Others may experience very subtle sensations or notice little change during the session.

There is no required sensation or response.

The goal is to provide a comfortable, individualized bodywork experience.

Craniosacral Therapy vs. Traditional Massage

Both approaches involve therapeutic touch, but the experience can be very different.

Craniosacral TherapyTraditional Therapeutic Massage

Fully clothedTypically involves undressing to your comfort level with appropriate draping

Gentle, sustained hand contactMay include kneading, compression, stretching, and targeted soft-tissue techniques

Neither approach is automatically better.

The right choice depends on your preferences, comfort, and individual goals.

My Approach to Craniosacral Therapy

I'm Ashley Biro, NC Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist #14844, Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, and Certified Traditional Naturopath.

With more than a decade of experience in therapeutic massage, I've worked with clients experiencing a wide range of muscular tension, movement limitations, and stress-related discomfort.

My background includes neuromuscular therapy, orthopedic massage, myofascial techniques, cupping, and other hands-on approaches.

I've also continued my education in holistic health, traditional naturopathy, and breathwork.

Most recently, I completed Craniosacral Therapy 1 (CS1) training, which included extensive independent study and four days of in-person instruction and hands-on practice.

One thing I've learned over the years is that more pressure doesn't necessarily mean better results.

Some clients prefer deeper work. Others respond better to gentler techniques.

And sometimes your needs change from one appointment to the next.

My goal at Fire & Ice Holistic Health is to provide thoughtful, individualized care rather than treating everyone with the same routine.

Craniosacral training gives me another approach to explore as I continue developing my hands-on skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Craniosacral Therapy hurt?

CST is generally performed with very light pressure and should not be painful. Please communicate any discomfort during your appointment so adjustments can be made.

Do I need to remove my clothes?

No. Craniosacral Therapy is performed fully clothed. Comfortable, flexible clothing is recommended.

Is Craniosacral Therapy the same as a head massage?

No. Although CST may involve contact around the head, it is a distinct bodywork approach that uses gentle, sustained hand placements at several locations throughout the body.

Does Craniosacral Therapy involve cracking or adjusting bones?

No. CST does not involve forceful spinal adjustments, cracking, or high-velocity manipulation.

Can Craniosacral Therapy help with TMJ or headaches?

People sometimes seek CST for these concerns, but there is insufficient reliable evidence to establish it as an effective treatment for TMJ disorders or headaches. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.

How will I feel after a session?

Experiences vary. Some people report feeling relaxed or calm, while others notice little immediate change. Individual responses cannot be guaranteed.

Can I combine Craniosacral Therapy with other massage techniques?

Gentle craniosacral techniques may be incorporated into a broader bodywork approach when appropriate. Your session options can be discussed when scheduling.
