Cupping Therapy in Matthews, NC

Personalized Cupping & Therapeutic Bodywork at Fire & Ice Holistic Health

Cupping is more than simply placing a few cups on tight muscles.

At Fire & Ice Holistic Health in Matthews, NC, cupping is incorporated thoughtfully into therapeutic bodywork based on your individual needs, comfort level and goals.

Ashley has extensive hands-on experience with cupping and previously taught a 14-hour continuing education course in cupping therapy for massage professionals.

That experience allows sessions to go far beyond a single technique.

Depending on the goal of your session, cupping may be performed using a professional vacuum cupping machine, silicone cups, or traditional hard plastic cups and may be combined with massage, movement and other bodywork techniques.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses negative pressure rather than compression.

Traditional massage primarily applies pressure downward into the tissues. Cupping creates gentle suction that lifts the skin and superficial tissues into the cup.

That different mechanical approach makes cupping a useful complement to hands-on massage.

Depending on the technique being used, cups may remain stationary for a period of time or move across the skin as part of the bodywork session.

The amount of suction, length of application and type of cup used are adjusted based on the area being treated and your individual response.

More Than One Kind of Cupping

There isn’t one single “correct” cupping technique.

At Fire & Ice, several types of cups and applications are available, allowing the session to be adapted rather than forcing every client into the same protocol.

Ashley works with:

  • Professional vacuum cupping equipment for precise control over suction (Medicupping)

  • Hard plastic cups in a variety of sizes

  • Silicone cups for more flexible applications and movement

  • Stationary cupping

  • Moving or gliding cupping

  • Cupping incorporated into therapeutic massage and bodywork

The technique chosen depends on the area being addressed, tissue response, your comfort and the overall goal of the session.

Cupping for Therapeutic Bodywork

Cupping may be incorporated into sessions for clients dealing with areas that feel tight, overworked or restricted.

Common areas where cupping may be used include the:

Back • Shoulders • Neck • Hips • Legs • Arms • Feet and other appropriate areas

Rather than treating cupping as a standalone cure for a particular condition, Fire & Ice uses it as one tool within a broader bodywork approach.

Your session may include massage, myofascial techniques, trigger point work, movement, stretching and cupping depending on what feels most appropriate for your body that day.

Why Experience Matters With Cupping

Cupping is easy to make look simple.

Good cupping requires understanding how much suction to use, how long to leave cups in place, where different techniques are appropriate and when cupping should not be used at all.

Ashley’s experience with cupping includes years of clinical bodywork practice as well as previously teaching a comprehensive 14-hour continuing education course for massage therapists.

That teaching background required going beyond simply knowing how to apply cups.

It involved understanding technique selection, equipment, safety considerations, tissue response and how cupping can be integrated appropriately into a therapeutic massage session.

At Fire & Ice, more suction is not automatically considered better.

The goal is thoughtful application — not seeing how dark we can make the circles.

Will Cupping Leave Marks?

It can.

Cupping may temporarily leave circular areas of discoloration where cups were applied.

The appearance can vary considerably from person to person and even from one area of the body to another.

These marks are not the goal of treatment and darker marks do not automatically mean a session was more effective.

If you have an upcoming event, photoshoot, vacation or anything else where visible cupping marks would bother you, please let Ashley know before your session.

Techniques can often be adjusted accordingly.

Does Cupping Hurt?

Cupping generally feels very different from deep tissue massage.

You may notice a pulling, lifting or tight sensation beneath the cup.

Some areas may feel more sensitive than others, but the amount of suction can be adjusted throughout the session.

You should always communicate if something feels uncomfortable.

Therapeutic bodywork does not need to be unbearably painful to be worthwhile.

What to Expect During Your Cupping Session

Before using cups, we’ll talk briefly about what you’re experiencing, your goals, relevant health history and whether cupping is appropriate for you.

Cupping may then be incorporated into your therapeutic massage rather than performed as an entirely separate experience.

Depending on the session, Ashley may use stationary cups, moving cups, silicone cups or controlled vacuum cupping.

You may also receive traditional massage and bodywork before, during or after the cupping portion of your session.

The entire appointment is customized rather than following a predetermined cupping routine.

When Cupping May Not Be Appropriate

Cupping is not appropriate for everyone or every area of the body.

Certain medical conditions, medications, skin concerns, recent injuries, surgeries or other circumstances may require modification or avoidance of cupping.

Please disclose relevant health information during your intake and let Ashley know about any recent changes before your appointment.

When appropriate, you may be encouraged to speak with your healthcare provider before receiving cupping.

Cupping + Massage

One of the advantages of receiving cupping at Fire & Ice is that it does not have to exist separately from the rest of your session.

Cupping can complement therapeutic massage by allowing Ashley to approach an area using both traditional compression-based bodywork and negative-pressure techniques.

You do not need to figure out which technique your body needs before you book.

Schedule your therapeutic massage, tell Ashley what has been bothering you, and the session can be customized from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book a separate cupping appointment?

Not necessarily. Cupping may be incorporated into therapeutic massage when appropriate. If you specifically want cupping included, mention it when booking or at the beginning of your appointment.

What kind of cups do you use?

Ashley works with multiple cupping tools, including silicone cups, hard plastic cups and professional vacuum cupping equipment. Different cups allow for different techniques and levels of control.

Will I definitely have marks afterward?

No. Marking varies depending on the person, the technique, the amount of suction and how long cups remain in place.

Are darker cupping marks better?

No. Darker marks are not a scorecard and do not necessarily mean a treatment was more successful.

Can you use cupping instead of deep pressure?

Sometimes cupping provides another option for approaching areas where traditional deep pressure may not be the preferred technique. Your session can use one method or combine several approaches.

Is cupping available without massage?

Contact Fire & Ice if you are specifically interested in a cupping-focused session so we can determine the best appointment option for you.
