Take a slow breath.
Now ask yourself a simple question:
How often do you actually think about the way you breathe?
For most people, the answer is "almost never."
Breathing is automatic, so we assume we're doing it correctly. But after working with hundreds of clients, I've found that many people are living with dysfunctional breathing patterns that quietly influence their stress levels, digestion, sleep, inflammation, energy, and even their ability to heal.
Breath is more than oxygen moving in and carbon dioxide moving out. Every breath sends information to your brain, your heart, your nervous system, and your body. It can reinforce a state of survival or help create a state of safety.
When we understand the physiology behind breathing, we begin to see that it isn't simply a wellness trend—it is one of the most accessible tools we have for influencing our health.
Why Breathing Matters
Breathing affects nearly every major system in the body.
Proper breathing supports:
Nervous system regulation
Heart rate variability (HRV)
Circulation
Lymphatic drainage
Digestion
Hormonal balance
Sleep quality
Stress resilience
Emotional regulation
Unlike many bodily functions, breathing is both automatic and voluntary. That means it gives us a unique opportunity to intentionally influence our autonomic nervous system.
Every breath is an opportunity to communicate with your body.
Most Adults Aren't Breathing Efficiently
Many people spend years breathing primarily into their upper chest rather than allowing the diaphragm to move fully.
Common dysfunctional breathing patterns include:
Mouth breathing
Rapid breathing
Shallow chest breathing
Breath holding during stress
Minimal rib cage movement
Constant tension through the neck and shoulders
These patterns often become so familiar that they feel normal.
Unfortunately, they may also contribute to chronic stress physiology.
The Autonomic Nervous System
Your autonomic nervous system controls many functions that happen automatically, including breathing, heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure.
It has two primary branches:
Sympathetic Nervous SystemThis is your fight-or-flight response. It prepares your body to respond to perceived danger.
Parasympathetic Nervous SystemThis is often called the "rest, digest, and repair" system. It supports recovery, digestion, immune function, and healing.
The goal is not to eliminate the sympathetic nervous system. We need it to respond to challenges.
The goal is flexibility—the ability to move into stress when appropriate and return to a regulated state afterward.
Healthy nervous systems aren't perfectly calm. They're adaptable.
Your Breath Influences Your Nervous System
One of the fastest ways to influence your autonomic nervous system is through your breath.
When you inhale, your heart rate naturally increases slightly.
When you exhale, your heart rate naturally slows.
A slower, controlled exhale encourages parasympathetic activity through the vagus nerve.
This is one reason many breathing exercises intentionally make the exhale longer than the inhale.
Something as simple as breathing in for four seconds and out for six seconds can begin shifting your physiology toward regulation.
Heart Rate Variability: A Window Into Resilience
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) refers to the variation in time between heartbeats.
Although it sounds counterintuitive, a healthy heart does not beat with perfectly even timing.
Greater variability generally reflects a more adaptable nervous system and improved resilience to stress.
Research has shown that slow, diaphragmatic breathing can improve HRV by supporting healthy autonomic regulation.
Improving HRV isn't about controlling your heart.
It's about improving your body's ability to respond to life's challenges.
Why Nasal Breathing Matters
Your nose was designed for breathing.
Nasal breathing helps:
Filter incoming air
Warm and humidify the air you breathe
Increase nitric oxide production
Improve oxygen utilization
Encourage slower, deeper breathing
Mouth breathing bypasses many of these natural advantages and often encourages rapid, shallow breathing.
Whenever possible, breathing through the nose should become your default.
Meet Your Diaphragm: Your Primary Breathing Muscle
The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located beneath the lungs.
As it contracts during inhalation, it moves downward, allowing the lungs to expand.
But the diaphragm does much more than help you breathe.
It also:
Creates pressure changes that assist lymphatic circulation
Supports venous blood return to the heart
Gently massages abdominal organs
Coordinates with the pelvic floor
Communicates with the nervous system through sensory receptors
One muscle.
Many jobs.
Breath & Lymphatic Drainage
Unlike your circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump like the heart.
Instead, lymph depends on movement.
Walking, muscle contractions, posture changes, and diaphragmatic breathing all help move lymph throughout the body.
If you sit for long periods, breathe shallowly, or keep your abdomen chronically braced, you reduce one of your body's natural mechanisms for supporting lymphatic movement.
This is one reason breathing and movement are foundational before considering more advanced detoxification strategies.
Breath & Trauma
One of the most fascinating aspects of breathing is its relationship with trauma.
When the nervous system experiences overwhelming stress, breathing often changes automatically.
Some people breathe rapidly.
Others unconsciously hold their breath.
Many develop chronic upper chest breathing.
These patterns aren't signs of weakness.
They're protective adaptations.
Trauma-informed breathwork recognizes that breathing patterns often reflect nervous system patterns.
For some individuals, slowing the breath immediately may feel uncomfortable because their body has learned to associate vigilance with safety.
This is why breath retraining should always respect the person's capacity.
Healing isn't about forcing relaxation.
It's about gradually expanding the nervous system's ability to experience safety.
Learning to Breathe Well
Healthy breathing is simple, but it often requires practice.
Start here:
Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor.
Relax your jaw and shoulders.
Rest your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth.
Breathe in slowly through your nose.
Allow your lower ribs and abdomen to expand.
Exhale gently for slightly longer than your inhale.
You don't need to force huge breaths.
Gentle, consistent practice is far more effective than intensity.
Two Simple Breathing Exercises
1. 4-7-8 Breathing
This exercise may be helpful before sleep or during periods of stress.
Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
Hold gently for 7 seconds (if comfortable).
Exhale slowly for 8 seconds.
If breath holds create anxiety, simply skip the hold and focus on extending the exhale.
2. Box Breathing
Popular among military personnel, athletes, and first responders, Box Breathing helps improve focus and emotional regulation.
Inhale for 4 seconds.
Hold for 4 seconds.
Exhale for 4 seconds.
Hold for 4 seconds.
Repeat for several rounds.
Breath & Hormonal Health
Chronic stress influences hormones throughout the body.
When the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of sympathetic activation, cortisol regulation can become disrupted.
Although breathing exercises are not a treatment for hormonal disorders, improving nervous system regulation may support healthier stress responses, better sleep, and improved overall physiological resilience—all of which play important roles in endocrine health.
A Five-Minute Daily Reset
You don't need an hour-long practice to begin experiencing benefits.
Try this once or twice each day:
Sit comfortably.
Inhale through your nose for approximately four seconds.
Allow your lower ribs to expand.
Exhale gently for six to eight seconds.
Continue for five minutes.
Consistency matters more than perfection.
Final Thoughts
Breathing is one of the few functions in the body that operates automatically while also allowing us to participate consciously.
That makes it incredibly powerful.
The goal of breathwork is not to eliminate stress, suppress emotions, or force relaxation.
The goal is to improve your body's ability to move between activation and recovery with greater flexibility.
Healing begins with physiology.
And sometimes the most profound changes begin with something you've been doing since the day you were born.
One breath at a time.
