Why Does My Knee Hurt? A Holistic Approach to Knee Pain

Over the past week, I've had several clients ask me about knee pain. Whether it's an old injury, arthritis, a meniscus tear, or pain that seems to have appeared out of nowhere, the truth is that there isn't one magic supplement or treatment that fixes every knee.
As a holistic practitioner, I always ask one question first:
Why is the knee hurting in the first place?
Pain is your body's way of asking for attention. Instead of simply masking symptoms, I prefer to look at the whole picture and identify what may be contributing to the pain.
Here are some of the areas we explore together.
Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation is often a major contributor to joint pain. We may discuss reducing processed foods, refined sugars, and inflammatory oils while increasing anti-inflammatory foods like wild-caught fish, colorful vegetables, healthy fats, and plenty of clean water.
For some individuals, a temporary elimination of gluten or dairy may also be worth considering to see if symptoms improve.
Support Cartilage, Tendons & Ligaments
Your joints are constantly repairing themselves, but they need the right building blocks.
Depending on your individual needs, support may include:
High-quality protein
Collagen peptides
Vitamin C
MSM
Glucosamine
Chondroitin
Hyaluronic Acid
Silica
Key minerals that support connective tissue
Movement is Medicine
One of the biggest misconceptions about knee pain is that you should stop moving.
While acute injuries sometimes require rest, chronic knee pain often improves with the right kind of movement.
We may discuss:
Walking
Swimming
Cycling
Gentle mobility exercises
Strengthening the hips and glutes
Improving balance and stability
Many knee problems actually begin in the feet, hips, or ankles rather than the knee itself.
Improve Circulation & Lymphatic Drainage
Healthy circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients while carrying away waste products that contribute to inflammation.
Some supportive therapies include:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Dry Brushing
Massage Therapy
Myofascial Release
Cupping
Red Light Therapy
PEMF
Contrast Hydrotherapy
Sauna (when appropriate)
Natural Herbal Support
Several herbs have been studied for their ability to support a healthy inflammatory response, including:
Turmeric
Boswellia
Ginger
Bromelain
Tart Cherry
Devil's Claw (when appropriate)
These aren't "pain killers," but they may help support the body's natural healing processes.
Boston Ivy Gemmotherapy
One remedy I often consider—especially for chronic knee discomfort involving the meniscus, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues—is Boston Ivy Gemmotherapy.
Gemmotherapy uses embryonic plant tissues (buds and young shoots), which are rich in growth factors and plant stem cells. Boston Ivy is traditionally used to support connective tissue repair and joint health, particularly when there has been wear-and-tear or previous injury.
As with any natural therapy, it isn't a cure-all, but it can be a valuable part of a comprehensive healing plan when selected for the right person. Please let me know if you need me to send you a link to this in fullscript.
Cellular Support with NAD+
Sometimes healing is limited because our cells simply don't have the energy they need.
NAD+ is a coenzyme involved in cellular energy production, tissue repair, and healthy aging. Some clients may benefit from additional NAD+ support as part of their wellness plan.
While I don't prescribe or manage NAD+ therapy directly, I've partnered with Lyv to provide clients with access to licensed medical providers who can evaluate whether therapies like NAD+, peptides, GLP-1 medications, hormone optimization, or other services are appropriate for them.
This allows you to receive comprehensive medical care through their team while continuing to work with me on nutrition, lifestyle, movement, and holistic wellness.
Don't Forget the Gut
One of the most overlooked contributors to chronic inflammation is digestive health.
Poor digestion, nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, and an unhealthy gut microbiome can all influence inflammation throughout the body—including your joints.
Sometimes supporting digestion can make just as much difference as supporting the knee itself.
